We are delighted to have Dr. Peter Masiakos as our 2026 JPS/Fred Macleod lecturer!

Masiakos - trauma head shot (002)Dr. Peter T. Masiakos, is the Director of Pediatric Trauma Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Masiakos is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in pediatric trauma care, injury prevention, and health policy. Over the past two decades, he has combined clinical excellence with a deep commitment to addressing the social and structural determinants of childhood injury.

Dr. Masiakos has built a remarkable career at the intersection of surgery, public health, and advocacy. He founded the Massachusetts General Hospital Trauma and Injury Prevention Program and later co-founded and now co-directs the MGH Center for Gun Violence Prevention, one of the nation’s leading academic programs addressing firearm injury as a public health crisis. His advocacy has directly informed legislation—Dr. Masiakos has helped to draft, testify for, and champion more than eleven Massachusetts injury prevention laws, including two landmark gun safety measures that have served as national models.

Through his scholarship, mentorship, and tireless advocacy, Dr. Masiakos has demonstrated how surgeons can extend their impact far beyond the operating room, improving not only the lives of individual patients but also the safety and well-being of communities nationwide.

Educational Objectives

The Annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons is intended to provide 3 days of comprehensive continuing education in the field of pediatric general and thoracic surgery.  Specifically, the objectives are to:

- Present and identify from current updates and advances in clinical paediatric surgery: Support the exchange of knowledge on advances in clinical paediatric surgery and the pathophysiology of paediatric surgical disorders, where both presenters and attendees contribute to and learn from the discussions. (Medical Expert, Collaborator, Scholar)

- Evaluate collaborative group discussions:  Evaluate the group discussions on controversial issues and topics in paediatric surgery to identify the approaches that foster collaboration. This will be achieved through: 1) presentation and critical discussion of scientific papers by trainees, paediatric surgeons and allied healthcare workers; 2) interactive panel discussions and debates that allow presenters and attendees to learn from each other on the clinical management and ethical aspects of paediatric surgery topics. - Discuss broad participation and knowledge sharing: Discuss the full breadth of paediatric surgery topics through the presentation of original clinical and basic science research as well as interesting cases and/or innovative new treatments. Presenters, who are also learners will be encouraged to share and acquire updates on the latest new developments in clinical and basic science research, as well as trends influencing the field of paediatric surgery. - Demonstrate active participation in a panel discussion on controversial topics in paediatric surgery: Controversial topics will be presented using a panel of experts while encouraging active participation and robust discussion from the audience ensuring a dynamic and inclusive exchange of knowledge.
